Buist Hardison, an accomplished illustrator and poet, has created a set of characters that he calls "The Little Shorties" which represent different personalities, skin colors, and hairstyles among African American children.
Dee, Eze, Neze, Tee, and Zee are five African American children called Shorties. They are between six and seven years old. Dee, Tee, and Zee are girls; Eze and Neze are boys. These Shorties live in a world where magical things happen every day. They live in a world where the majority of the people they see are African American. They are never out-numbered. They live in a world where small dreams come true, and nothing truly bad ever happens. Their stories are about the joys and magic of childhood, like the little hurts a parent’s kiss can cure. Shorties attend church and just begin to go to school. They love each other; they love God; and God loves them.
